Sandra Kring's first book, Carry Me Home

After reading The Book of Bright Ideas I searched out Sandra Kring's first book, Carry Me Home. Earl "earwig' lives in rural Wisconsin during the World War II. Due to a fever that left his brain "like meat cooked too long" Earl maintains an innocence unlike other teens. His life has to change when his brother, Jimmy, enlists and is lost in Bataan. Earl makes a place for himself with friends and a job at the local bowling alley. He discovers a family secret and when Jimmy returns he helps him to find his way. I got caught up in the story and the well developed characters. I also realized that prisoners of war from WWII were as severely traumatized as the Vietnam vets.
