China’s garden tradition began 3,000 years ago with royal hunting reserves and imperial palace landscaping. But it is the private gardens of Chinese officials, philosophers and poets, known as Scholar’s Gardens, that are most noteworthy and best reflect the Chinese spirit. The scholar’s garden offered an intimate experience of the larger landscape without leaving the city and provided the stressed-out official with a sense of fitting into the natural environment. Through photos and paintings, this presentation reveals the symbolism of some of China’s most beloved flowers and plants, many familiar to today’s American gardener.
